The Board of Education considers policy development its chief function, along with appraisal of the results achieved through its policies. It is through the development and adoption of written policies that the board exercises its leadership in the operation of the school district; it is through study and evaluation of reports concerning the execution of its written policies that the board exercises its control over school operation.
Board policies address a wide range of topics organized into sections, which include Goals, Community, Board of Education, Administration, Instruction, Students, Financial, Services, and Personnel.
Adoption of new policies or changing of existing policies is solely the responsibility of the board. Policies will be adopted, amended, or deleted by the affirmative vote of a majority of the members of the board when such action has been scheduled on the agenda of a regular or special meeting. Policies will be presented at three consecutive regular board meetings as an informational item (first reading), as a hearing item (second reading), and as an action item.
Copies of all board policies will be contained in a policy manual issued to each board member, administrators, principals, and the Hicksville Public Library and are available for review in each school, the administration building, and the Hicksville Public Library.
